My home state, North Carolina, provides me lots of opportunities. I hunt deer, squirrels, feral pigs, and the occasional rabbit and dove. During the summer months I fish both in freshwater lakes and on the coast and crab extensively. In the fall and winter when I am not hunting, I take time to go shrimping and gather oysters. I haven't even yet found time to hunt ducks or turkeys or go clamming or gathering scallops although I would like to.
I am a big supporter of eating what you harvest, part because I believe it is the ethical thing to do and part because I really love food. Since my father moved down to North Carolina with me, we have had much success, and we now have two freezers mostly full all of the time with wild game and seafood. I had a problem though ... as a family we really only had a few recipes that we used with all of this amazing food thus the need for new ways to prepare, cook, and eat it.
As you can see all of that ties in nicely with my love of cooking. I have my mom to thank for that. She was/is such a good cook it made me want to do the same. I love taking recipes and "making them my own" (sorry - also American Idol fan).
So in this blog I plan to post about hunting, cooking, and eating. That might include funny stories, books that I have read, recipes that I think rock.
